If you’re like me when I was just starting out… you’ve probably come across tons of YouTube tutorials or free courses trying to teach you that one trick that will get children in the door, increase daycare enrollment, and help you achieve financial security and stability.
I mean, there’s a lot of great stuff out there, no doubt. But when I was starting I got frustrated watching hours of videos and only getting a few minutes worth of valuable content.
And that’s why I’m writing this right now.
If you take just a few minutes to read this page, I’m going to SHOW YOU exactly HOW SUCCESSFUL DIRECTORS LEAD by DOING WHAT YOU LOVE and delegate the other responsibilities. This is exactly what made it possible for me to earn 7-figure business in childcare!
Believe it not, I am a REAL working childcare provider with REAL clients who pay my center hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.
HI, MY NAME IS KISHIA CAREY
And the first thing you should know about me is that I am NOT a childcare expert. Even though I have 22-years of experience in childcare, I consider myself a forever learner. I’m always looking for what works best.
Because of that, over the past few years, I have helped dozens of other childcare owners increase daycare enrollment and grow top-line revenue.
But it wasn’t always that way.
Just a few years ago I was really stuck…
I just wanted to provide for my daughter. I was working WAY harder than I needed to.
I used to feel frustrated with my childcare business–I was barely making ends meet!
I worked day and night, struggling to make payroll and pay taxes. Every year I’d lose kids to the State’s Pre-K program and Head Start.
I mean, how was I supposed to compete with that? I knew people would always choose free over me!
I struggled with finding good help so I was always in the classroom and not able to be the “director” and run my center. I was exhausted because I did ALL the jobs in the center. I suffered through many sleepless nights because I stayed up all night worried how I was going to make ends meet.
At one point I even tried to sell the business but no one would buy it because it wasn’t valuable. That’s when I secretly assembled a resume and applied for director jobs online in another state. After doing several over-the-phone interviews, telling potential employers about my experience and how i can build their business… one day it dawned on me I can do this for myself.
So I decided I had to make a change…
Six months later, the value of the business started to grow.
- We created an employee handbook including policies on tardiness, call-in procedures, salary, dress codes, and code of conduct.
- We created weekly lesson plans to ensure learning consistently in all the classrooms, designated a specific outside time, and created checklists to keep up with the children on the playground.
- We made changes to our parent policies to require payments before payroll would post, enforced late payment fees, and turned over non-pay accounts to a collection agency.
I say “we” but at the start, I was the one moving the vision forward and creating all of this.
I created a website and social media page to show all the “good things” that were happening in my center. It didn’t take long for me to transition out of the classroom and into the office as the true center director.
However, as the center continued to grow, I quickly became bogged down with the day-to-day operation of the center. I hired another teacher so my assistant director could be in the front office and co-manage operations with me. And even though I went from spending 60-80 hours in the center per week to 40-50 hours per week, my physical presence was still required in the center daily in order for things to go smoothly.
Everyday there was a fire that had to be put out. I was answering phone calls, taking payments, and doing tours which consumed my time. That meant I fell further behind in required paperwork and audit requests from various agencies.
All this time I was so caught up in putting out fires that I forgot about the most BASIC element of business…
I juggled many balls in the air until one day they fell flat on my face and I knew I had to do something different.
I came to a very painful realization that I couldn’t run the business and be in the business.
It was time I stepped down as center director so I could WORK ON THE BUSINESS. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do.
It was also the best thing I ever did.
This was the moment I became the CEO.
In order to keep the center in step with the new procedures I worked so hard on, I had to put a few things in place.
- I had new cameras installed in the center where I can observe on my cell phone.
- I use a payroll processing company that deducts payroll taxes and they file quarterly and annual reports on my behalf.
- I use online bill pay to streamline and automate bill paying in the center.
As soon as I stopped focusing on daily operations and started focusing on the reason why I got into childcare, everything changed for me… fast!
My business started to grow and I made 6 figures for the first time in my life! I started getting attention for my work and even received worldwide attention a national platform!
I was able to transform my business and create real impact in my community. I found a way to stop my business from running me and started to successfully run my business. Not only am I now able to pay the bills, I have money in the bank, and I am saving towards retirement.
I pay my daughter’s college tuition and I am able to give back to my community by buying school clothes and Christmas gifts for families in need.
